One night, awareness-sensitive teenager Momo Minamoto sees suspicious distant shades belonging to a group of spies. This leads to her being recruited by their captain, Yuki Hanzoumon, a senior at her school. The members of their secret agency, called the Tsukikage, have the power to gain strength after ingesting spices. Momo joins the Tsukikage’s missions as they fight in the shadows to protect the city from crime while keeping up with their high school life. [Adapted from MAL]
While some at the time of release complained about Release the Spyce as having ‘squandered’ an engaging premise with an underwhelming execution, its staff made interesting choices when it came to scouting real-world locations for espionage-related shenanigans, especially confined to mostly the city of Kawasaki. Kawasaki makes up the the less famous third section of the Keihin Industrial Area in Tokyo Bay alongside Tokyo proper and Yokohama, and its wharfs are home to a lot of heavy industry and power plants. The high school is Kawasaki High School.
