Shuumatsu Train

The introduction of 7G Network technology plunged Japan into chaos and rapidly altered its physical landscape. In a seemingly ordinary rural town of Agano, all residents over 21 have seemingly turned into animals. But Shizuru Chikura is more concerned for her missing friend. Determined to find her, Shizuru and three other girls board an abandoned train and travel to the outside world, unsure if they’ll make it back alive.

Shuumatsu Train is equal parts Covid-19 reconstruction narrative and abstract travelogue down the Seibu Ikebukuro Line. The particular train car, A Seibu 2000 series marked 2643, can be found in service today on the Seibu Ikebukuro line. The most recognizable landmarks can be found at the starting point, Agano, and the ending point, Ikebukuro.

In May, the Shuumatsu production committee and Seibu Railway Company announced a stamp rally collaboration designed to coincide with the airing of the anime and the 95th anniversary of the opening of the Ikebukuro line between Hanno Station and Agano Station. Naturally, the rally involved stops at different points of the Seibu Ikebukuro line between Agano Station and Ikebukuro station, most of which were highlighted in the anime. The stamp rally ran from Friday, May 24 to Monday, July 15, 2024. Some genuine train parts from Seibu Ikebukuro trains and signed copies of the script were raffled away as part of the stamp rally to individuals who collected all seven stamps.

The stamp sheet bears a bit of resemblance to the station map from the anime.

A resort called Kyukamura Oku-Musashi near Agano built out a small Shuumatsu Train themed display area with standees and a model train set featuring a Seibu 2000 series done up like the 2643 which routes around some scaled-down versions of locations in Agano shown in the anime.
